They propose a replacement or trade assistance

A swap and a dealer trade can have very different costs.

What to do, in order

  1. Ask whether the offer is a statutory replacement, voluntary manufacturer settlement or ordinary dealer trade with an incentive.
  2. Get the exact VIN, trim, options, price difference, taxes, fees, financing, treatment of old debt and new warranty start date.
  3. Ask what happens to pending claims and what release is required. Compare the total obligation, not just the monthly payment.
  4. Obtain independent legal or financial review if terms are unclear before surrendering the original vehicle.

What you can say

“Please identify the type of transaction and provide the complete cost, debt and release terms for the replacement vehicle.”

What to watch for

A newer model or higher trim is not automatically owed. Trade assistance may leave you responsible for negative equity.

Your next step

Compare the written offer with the buyback checklist.

These steps are suggested consumer practices. Follow case-specific instructions, state requirements and your attorney’s advice when they apply.
